This is a smart cased set of 6 George VI Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons in the Puritan style from the time of the Second World War. The spoons are called "Original Devon Spoons" as they are copies of a Puritan spoon made by an Exeter silversmith around 1660, the time of the restoration of the monarchy under Charles II. The spoons have a card in the box identifying them as such.

The spoons are made in Sheffield by Thomas Bradbury & Sons and date to 1944/45. Silver was a restricted material during the Second World War and most silversmiths had their resources redirected into the war effort and many of their staff called up to fight. As a result, silver from the war years is much rarer than in the years before and after.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and only the most minimal superficial surface wear. It seems likely that the spoons have seen little or no use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The coffee spoons are each 7.9cm / 3.1ins long and the set of 6 together, uncased, weighs in at a respectable 36.5g / 1.29oz.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter B for 1944 or C for 1945 and the T.B & S in a shield makers' mark for Thomas Bradbury & Sons.
