6 x 19th C. Mask Coffee Spoons, Th. Marthinsen

This is a very unusual set of six 19th century Norwegian 830 Silver Coffee Spoons from the early 1890s. The spoons are double struck with an s-link decoration on the stems and a mask or face at the top of each stem. On the upper side the face is serious with a downturned mouth whilst on the underside the face is that of a jester with a smiling mouth, similar in theme to the classic tragedy and comedy masks of Greek theatre.
The spoons are made in Tønsberg, Norway by renowned silversmiths Thorvald Marthinsen. Founded in 1883, Marthinsen remains a family run business today and are particularly well known for their fine quality spoons and flatware.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after around 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The coffee spoons are each 9.9cm / 3.9ins long and the set of 6 together weighs in at a very respectable 63.9g / 2.25oz of solid silver.
The spoons are marked in the bowls with the famous goblet mark of Thorvald Marthinsen and the lion rampant with an axe Norwegian silver mark showing that they are at least 830 / 1000 grade silver. This mark was introduced by law in 1891 and in 1892/3 a further law required the grade to be stamped on the product as well, so as these just have the lion mark they are from 1891 or 1892.
