3 x Victorian York Silver Teaspoons, 1853

Here we have a nice set of 3 Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoons in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoons are made in York by James Barber and date to 1853. James Barber, a specialist spoon maker, was in business, either alone or in various partnerships, between 1812 and 1858, when the York assay office was closed. He was at that point the last remaining silversmith in York.
York has a very long history with silver and had it's first assay mark established by Act of Parliament in 1423. The assay office was re-established 1701, closed in 1716, reopened in 1776 and finally closed in 1858. Unusually, the silver assayed in York virtually never included the York assay mark and has to be identified by the combination of hallmarks.
Condition of the spoons is very good with no dings or dents and only the minimal surface wear you would expect after nearly 170 years. The initials "ML" are elegantly engraved at the top of each spoon. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoons are each 13.7cm / 5.4" long and the set of 3 weighs a very respectable 48.4g / 1.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the date letter "S" for 1853, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JB makers' mark for James Barber.
