19th Century Carved Coco de Mer Basket

A 19th century polished coco de mer nut carved and hollowed out to form a basket with a serrated rim and integral handle. Holes have been drilled into the base presumably to aerate the food it once carried.
Referred to by Sailors as " Bum Nuts", their source remained a mystery until 1768 when French sailors discovered Isle de Palme in the Seychelles which proved to be the only home to the Coco de Mer palm. They are recorded as being the largest and heaviest fruit in the plant kingdom.

Condition: Excellent antique condition, possessing good colour and without damage or repairs.
