19th C. Oil Canvas Menai Straits Bridge N. Wales

We are offering this very well executed oil painting on canvas on the Menai Straits Suspension Bridge in North Wales that links Anglesey to the rest of Wales. The stretcher of the canvas bears the elegantly formed initials E. H. L. but we are unsure whether these initials are those of the artist or of the original owner. We have dated the painting to the late 19th Century by the stamp on the back of the canvas.
The Menai Suspension Bridge (Welsh: Pont Grog y Borth) is a suspension bridge to carry road traffic between the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales. The bridge was designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1826 and is a Grade I listed structure.
The painting presents a panoramic view, taken from a high point on the Snowdonia side of the Straits, before the Britannia Bridge, and looking out towards the Irish Sea. There are several sailing vessels, of differing sizes. out on the waters.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3" gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass D-ring hangers and new brass picture wire, ready to hang.
Image size: 23 1/2" x 17 3/4" - 59.65cm x 45.1cm
Frame size: 29 3/4" x 24" - 75.55cm x 61cm
Medium: Oils on George Rowney & Co. canvas
Condition: Very good. There are no repairs to the canvas, which is clean and taut. There is no craquelure and only very faint stretcher marks. There is some old woodworm to one of the stretcher bars, which has been treated as a precaution. The frame is new.
