19th C. Hinks Ornate Brass Table Lamp & New Shade

We are delighted to offer this wonderful Victorian Brass Oil Lamp by Hinks, which has been converted to an electric Table Lamp and its bespoke shade from the makers of the Downton Abbey, Peaky Blinders, Mr. Selfridge etc., lampshades.
The base has a pierced foliate rim around the reeded centre and sits upon three foliate feet. The slender socle has three ornate supports, terminating in mask heads, to hold the centrally pierced reservoir with its ornate cap, upon which you will find the Hinks No 2 Duplex burner. The lamp has been converted to electricity.
James Hinks & Son, 91-96 Great Hampton Street & 66 Hockley Street, Birmingham, were established before 1865 as James Hinks and made many oil lamps and similar products. James and Joseph Hinks patented the duplex burner and the extinguisher lever in 1865.
This was much better than the straight single wick burner and the idea was copied by others when the patent expired. They also invented the idea of using a key to raise the gallery to facilitate lighting the burner without the need to remove the glass chimney. Joseph had taken over the company in 1839. (Extract courtesy of oldcopper.org)
The bespoke shade is in the Vienna style and is made from embroidered faux silk in soft gold, with a design of stems, leaves and flowers, and has a double fringe in vanilla overlaid in gold, with matching gold braid.
The lamp has been rewired in pale gold coloured fabric covered flex in the antique style and has all new fittings, including safer switched lampholder, shade carrier and plug. As with all electrical items, it is recommended that it be checked by a qualified electrician before use.
Height to top of shade: 27 3/4" - 70.5cm
Diameter of shade: 14 3/4" - 37.5cm
Diameter of base: 7 1/2" - 19cm
Condition: Very good. There is no damage to the brass of the lamp and the shade is new.
