1930s Heal and Son Oak Book and Drinks Table
We have for sale a rather unusual and very attractive art deco oak Heal & Son Ltd book table and drinks cabinet.
The table is of an octagonal form with four flat panel legs extending down from the octagonal table top to the floor supporting four small bookcases and a lower flat shelf. What makes this particular table particularly unusual is that the top has two sliding panels that pull out to reveal a drinks cellar perfectly sized to house ones favorite tipple. The table was designed to allow one to sit and read ones favorite book and then slide open the the table top and poor oneself a relaxing drink. It conjures up a very pleasant image. Variations of the hexagonal book table were made by Heal & Son ltd from the the 1920s and into the 1930s. This is the only example we have encountered that incorporates a drinks cabinet under sliding panels in the top, which suggests it may be rather rare. The Heal octagonal antique tables were pretty much of set dimensions and this example is no different in that respect measuring 24 inches (61cm) high and 23.5 inches (60cm) deep and wide.
The table is in a very good condition other than a small a repair to one of the sliding panels and the surface patina one would expect from a good well used 1930s drinks table.
Unfortunately the bottle of gin illustrated in this listing is not included in the sale.
