1903 Silver Card Case, Provenance Whalley Abbey
We have for sale a lovely Edwardian engraved patented silver card case with provenance associated with Sir James Travis Clegg, Whalley Abbey and Bailrigg Mansio.
This beautifully engraved Edwardian silver oblong card case is of a patented thumb push design engraved with the entwined monogram GRFC along with the date 1st October. The card case carries full English hallmarks for Birmingham 1903 and the makers marks for William Henry Sparrow. What makes this card case really interesting is that it still contains the original name cards for Mr G R Francis-Clegg of Whalley Abbey, lancashire, matching the monogram. That Mr Clegg later moved to Bailrigg Mansion (now the current Lancaster University Health Centre) is also evidenced by a hand written address change on all the cards.
A little bit of research reveals that Whalley abbey was bought by Sir James Travis-Clegg in 1900. He was an important Lancashire politician who continued living at Whalley abbey until 1923 when he sold it to the Diocese of Manchester. Sir James Travis Clegg moved to Bailrigg mansion. Thus it seems that the card case was a gift to his son Mr Godfry Roy Travis-Clegg who also moved with the family from Whalley Abbey to Bailrigg.
The card case is approximately 3 & 1/3 inches (8.4cm) long and is in an excellent condition with no signs of damage or repair.
