18thc portrait of Reverend Thomas Bodham by Lemuel Francis Abbott.Unsigned in a contemporary gilded frame. Labels verso.

Rev. Thomas Bodham was the husband of Anne Bodham (nee Donne) who was the first cousin of William Cowper.

Lemuel Francis Abbott (1760-1803) was a renowned portrait painter whose image of 1st Viscount Horatio Nelson was one of his most well known, as well as painting other top literary figures and naval officers of the day.He was born in Leicestershire and studied under Francis Hayman and later Joseph Wright of Derby.

Provenance :by family descent.

The painting has some craquelure, relined a long time ago. The frame needs some attention.

Approx. sight size 29.25" high x 24.25" wide. Overall 36.25" high x 31.25" wide.
