18th century mahogany Architects table
Fine 18th century Chippendale design George III Scottish mahogany Architects writing table. Made from very good heavy dark mahogany throughout with very nice square tapered legs with moulded toes.
Typical 18th century thumb moulding to top with astragal moulding around the base of the carcass. Three drawers with cock beading. The two smaller outside drawers are oak lined with original brass swan neck handles, the right hand drawer is also fitted.
The top has a ratchet system beneath so it can be set to various heights. The whole piece shows signs of good use but retains a lovely rich colour and patination.
There is a filled crack to the lift up top part but it is stable. The left hand drawer has a missing lock (can't find an old one big enough)
This table has had some later 19th century alterations, originally there would have been two parts which lifted up on a double ratchet system but the lower one has now been fixed and the middle "drawer" part below has been made into a drawer. This doesn't detract from what is still a very nice piece of 18th century Scottish antique furniture, in fact it is probably more useful as it now stands.
Formly it came from BLAIR CASTLE in Ayrshire which is now a luxury hotel come function estate.
SIZE 47" wide by 21 1/2" from front to back by 30" high
