18CT Gold Centre Seconds Pocket Watch, Penlington


A very fine and rare, antique, English, 18CT Gold, Centre Seconds Pocket Watch made by Joseph Penlington of Liverpool and dating from c1867.
Joseph Penlington is an important English maker, known for the manufacture of marine chronometers.
The 18CT Gold case is hallmarked with the maker's mark "HW", the "crown" and "18" for 18 carat gold, the Leopard's Head London town mark and date letter "m" for 1867/68. The case also has the serial number 11158 to match the movement and dial, proving all are original and have been together since new.
The rear of the case has engine turned engraving and a circular, central cartouch with an engraved armorial crest, depicting an arm, reaching out from the sea holding an anchor.
The white enamel dial has the hours in Roman numerals and is signed by the maker "Jos'h Penlington, Liverpool" above the serial number 11,158.
The movement is signed by the maker "Jos'h Penlington, Liverpool" alongside the serial number 11,158. It is key wound and set with the key provided.
It measures 46mm in diameter. The weight is 75.6g
