George V Silver Vesta Case, Jos. Gloster, 1919
This is a smart George V Sterling Silver Vesta Case or Match Safe. The vesta is oblong with rounded corners and decorated with engine turned checkerboard stripes. The circular cartouche on the front is engraved with the initials H J.
The vesta case was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Joseph Gloster Ltd, one of the principal vesta case manufacturers, and dates to 1919. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and were quickly successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of tiny dings at the back plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case measures 4.2cm / 1.6ins by 3.8cm / 1.5ins and is 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 26.9g / 0.95oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1919 and the J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
