6 x Art Nouveau Silver Buttons, Wm. Comyns, 1913
Here we have an exquisite cased Set of Six Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Buttons. The buttons feature an image of the Greek goddess Demeter (Ceres to the Romans), who was the goddess of wheat, corn and the harvest and is pictured with her scythe. There is a second smaller figure stood in front of her, which may represent her lover Iasion. The buttons come in their original fitted case with a tan leather exterior, a blue velvet tray and a cream satin lining.
The buttons were made in London by renowned silversmiths William Comyns & Sons and date to 1913. William Comyns founded his firm in 1859, later being joined by his sons. They produced silverware of the highest quality, often in striking designs. The company passed through several generations of the Comyns family and finally ceased trading in the early 1990s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. The box is also in good condition, with the hinges and clasp in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each button is 2.2cm in diameter and the set of six together weighs in at a respectable 33.1g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the front of each button at the bottom, are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s for 1913 and the W.C makers' mark for William Comyns & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Deivery, which includes cover for the value of the buttons.
