Vintage Silver 4 Piece Dressing Table Set, 1971
Here we have a beautiful Vintage Sterling Silver Backed Four Piece Dressing Table Set. The set consists of a hand mirror, a hair brush, a comb and a clothes brush. The mirror and hair brush have an image of the Green Man perring out of scrolling flowers and foliage with a bird perched at the top and the face of Herne, the horned huntsman at the bottom of the handles. The clothes brush has two side on images of Herne either side of scrolling foliage and the mount on the comb has scrolling foliage and flowers. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set was made in Birmingham by Broadway & Co and dates to 1971, with the comb dating to 1975, perhaps a replacement for a lost or damaged original. Broadway & Co was founded by William Benjamin Broadway in Birmingham in 1901. The firm quickly established a reputation for good quality workmanship and produced a wide range of silverware for personal and domestic use. The company, now called Broadway Silversmiths, remains under the control of the Broadway family to this day and still uses many of the original dies and tools from the early years of the company, of which this set is a good example.
Condition is very good, with just a few truly tiny dings in the silver plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. There are no scratches or fogging on the mirror. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hand mirror is 23.5cm / 9.2ins long and 12cm / 4.7ins across. The hair brush is 21.5cm / 8.4ins long and 7cm / 2.7ins across. The comb is 16.5cm / 6.5ins long and the clothes brush is 15cm / 5.9ins long and 3.3cm / 1.3ins across. All together, the set weighs in at 521g / 18.37oz.
The hallmarks on all the pieces are nice and clear to read. On the mirror and the two brushes they show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter W for 1971 and the B & Co makers' mark for Broadway & Co. The comb has the date letter A for 1975.
